Student visa requirements:
You can apply for a student visa in Canada if you meet the following criteria:
- You have been accepted by a designated learning institute (DLI)
- You need to prove that you have solid funds to pay for your tuition fee and living expenses.
- Documents to prove that you have a clean background and no criminal record. (Police clearance certificate)
- Produce medical certificates that proves you are in good health.
- Enough proofs to convince the authorities that you will leave Canada after the study time period.
- Valid passport and English language proficiency score.
- Official letter of acceptance from a Canadian university, college or Technical Institute.
To study in Canada, you will need to obtain a Canadian study permit, which serves as a Canadian student visa for the duration of your stay. You do not need to have a Canadian study permit if your course or program lasts six months or less. However, you might want to apply for a study permit anyway, otherwise, if you decide you want to continue your studies on another program, you will need to leave Canada to apply for a study permit through a visa office. Once you have a Canadian study permit, you can apply to renew it from within Canada if you decide to continue your studies. For full-time students registered at an accredited higher education institution, a study permit also allows you to work part-time on campus. You may also be able to work off-campus, work as an intern as part of your program, stay in Canada as a permanent resident or find permanent work after graduation.
Student Direct Stream (SDS):
It is an online application created by IRCC for students in India, China, Morocco, Pakistan, Senegal, Vietnam and the Philippines on 8th June 2018. It is to provide more eligible students with the opportunity of studying at a Canadian post-secondary institution and to make the study permit application process smoother and faster.
To be eligible for SDS, you need to:
- Have the minimum required IELTS score of 6.0 in English (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).
- Have to purchase a ‘Guaranteed Investment Certificate’ (GIC) of $10,000.
- Have been accepted by an eligible post-secondary designated learning institute (DLI).
- Pay the tuition fees for the first year of study
- Complete an upfront medical examination.
After you apply:
After you have submitted an online application, IRCC will send you an email to submit fingerprints and photos (biometrics). You have 30 days to do your biometrics. You need to give the biometrics in person. To find the nearest biometrics collection service point, please click the link below:
In some cases, you will be called for an interview or asked to produce additional documents like a police certificate or a medical report. It will be asked by the IRCC.
When your visa application is approved, you will get a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction. Students from countries which require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) or a temporary residence visa will be given these if required. ETA will be linked to your passport and it is important that you travel with the passport you used when you applied for the study permit. ETA will be valid for five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Keep all the documents like proof of finances and letter of acceptance handy along with your passport which you will have to submit at the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). CBSA will then grant your Canadian study permit and let you enter Canada.
In most cases, an application under the SDS category will be processed in 20 days from the biometrics submission date, but it can change due to several facts. Find out more about process timing below:
