Language Tests: Book Your Test
Passing an approved language test is a mandatory requirement for most Canadian immigration pathways, including Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, and citizenship applications. IRCC accepts specific tests for both English and French proficiency. Below are the four officially approved tests with direct links to book your exam.
English Language Tests
IELTS General Training
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world's most widely accepted English language test, accepted by IRCC for all immigration and citizenship applications. For immigration purposes, you must take the IELTS General Training version — not the Academic version. The test is administered in Canada by two official providers: IDP Canada and the British Council.

CELPIP General
The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) is a fully computer-based English test developed at the University of British Columbia. It is accepted by IRCC for permanent residency, temporary residency, citizenship, and the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). With results in just 2–4 days, it is the fastest option available.

French Language Tests
TEF Canada
The Test d'Évaluation de Français (TEF) Canada is an official French language proficiency test accredited by IRCC. It is the preferred test for applicants targeting French-language Express Entry draws, which have historically required lower CRS scores. TEF Canada is administered through a global network of over 500 authorized test centres.
TCF Canada
The Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF) Canada is accredited by IRCC and also recognized by the Ministère de l'Inclusion, Francisation et Immigration (MIFI) for Quebec immigration applications. The test consists of four mandatory components and takes approximately 2 hours and 47 minutes. Results are issued within 15 working days and are valid for 2 years.
