Sponsor your spouse, partner, or dependent children

Overview

If you can support your spouse, partner, or dependent children financially and make sure they don’t need social assistance from the government, you might be eligible to sponsor them to become permanent residents in Canada.

Eligibility

  • You reside in Canada
  • If you’re a Canadian citizen living outside Canada, you must show your plans to live in Canada when the persons you want to sponsor become permanent residents. Please note that you can’t sponsor someone if you’re a permanent resident living outside of Canada
  • You must prove that you’re not receiving social assistance for reasons other than a disability
  • You must promise (sign an undertaking that is valid for a particular period) to financially take care of the persons you are sponsoring for

Income Requirement

Usually, no minimum income is required to sponsor your spouse, partner, or dependent child. If you live in Quebec, you must adhere to Quebec’s specific sponsorship rules and requirements.

  • For a spouse, partner from $1,080
  • For a child from $150
